Night Reign: Forged with Iron

Prologue (Part 1)

In Which Two Strangers Come to Havenshire.

1 Autumn, 2979

Winston Oakar spoke to his son Dorian about leaving Havenshire because of continuous tax increases. The disgruntled youth left the house, bound for the nearest tavern – the Grouse Feather Inn.

* * *

Elros encountered Jolial of Krul on the path near Havenshire. The elf recommended the Grouse Feather Inn as a place to stay, and they walk toward town together.

* * *

Juke spotted a warhorse in the town, and overheard Bone Guard soldiers talking about a stranger in town – Tetheus Egaine, the squire to Alidor Quzar, also known as the “Butcher of Halidus.”

* * *

Malachi was awakened by Parris, the crippled son of his mentor Redick. They returned to the Parademis household, and Malachi was assigned the task of determining his avatar.

* * *

Obaba was visited by the seneschal Wretch and informed of taxes owed by the end of the tenday.

* * *

Haggin was likewise visited by Wretch, only he was told that he owed back taxes – an even larger sum.

* * *

Eventually, the characters gathered in the Grouse Feather Inn and listen to Jolial’s tale of revolution in Calideer. Shortly after they noticed that Obaba’s nephew (the innkeeper) was no longer in the building, Tetheus Egaine entered with Primus Decanus Haderstall and a pair of Bone Guard. Jolial was arrested, but not before he subtly pushed his pack beneath the table, which Juke noticed.

Obaba went searching for her nephew, the cousins and Elros followed the bard and his captors from a safe distance, Juke took Jolial’s pack and some coins he’d left on the table beneath his mug and took off for “the wood shed”, and Haggin followed her.

* * *

The pack contained books, parchments, an apparently empty bag, a holy symbol of the Sun, and a very large metallic scale (animal, not measuring). Suddenly afraid, Juke decided that she needed to fetch Malachi to read the documents for her. She ran into Haggin just outside the hut, and the blind cushani’s presence nearly scared her to death. She summarized what she had found and where she was going. He opted to stay behind.

* * *

Haggin pawed through the pack until he found the source of the smell he’d been tracking – that of wildflowers. It seemed to be a small medallion. When he touched it, he had a vision of the Sun in a bright blue sky. Though he had been blind since birth, he knew what he was experiencing. When the vision ended, he found that he could see.

Juke returned with Malachi and Dorian, and the sight of people startled Haggin mightily. They were also startled by the miracle – and the cushani’s suddenly golden eyes. He left the shed to explore the town with his eyes for the first time.

* * *

Malachi noted that the books were largely histories, and the parchments seemed to be lists of names and sealed letters. Dorian unwittingly discovered that the bag was deeper than it appeared, and promptly tossed it away in fear. His cousin picked it up and started pulling all manner of strange items from the small bag – weapons, a lute, spices, and even more books. Suddenly concerned about Jolial’s continued well-being, they packed all of his belongings back where they’d found him and returned to the square.

* * *

Elros sneaked into Boneguardia™, lurking among the tents to try to learn more about what they wanted with Jolial. He got close enough to hear them questioning him about some aspects of the story that that bard had related to the group. When the torture began, the elf made his exit. He returned to the square about the same time as the others were recongregating there…
